Tom Smythe Sr. Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Mr. Thomas Ira Smythe, Sr., age 83, passed away Monday, January 17, 2022, at White Oak Manor in Rock Hill. The family will hold a graveside funeral service at a future time. Born in Fort Mill, Tom was a son of the late Floyd Smythe and Velma McManus Smythe. He attended Fort Mill High School and graduated from Augusta Military Academy. Later, he proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. After attending Louisburg Junior College, Tom earned his degree at Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College) in Wilson, N.C. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Smythe worked as a water treatment chemist. He enjoyed sports, especially football and basketball. Mr. Smythe is survived by his partner, Norma Darlene Spoon of Fort Mill; his son, Dr. Thomas I. Smythe, Jr. and daughter-in-law Melissa, of Ft. Myers, Florida; his grandchildren, Victor Nelson of Charleston, S.C., Meagan Smythe (Xastin Sansos) of Hendersonville, N.C. and Erica Smythe of Columbia, S.C.; his brother-in-law, Rev. Charles H. Mercer, Sr. of Durham, N.C.; nieces and nephews, Jimmy Scott (Dr. Nathalie Côté) of Fort Mill, S.C., Mary Smythe Mercer of Raleigh, N.C. and Charles Mercer, Jr. (Alene) all of Raleigh, N.C. Mr. Smythe was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Britt Smythe (1967) and his daughter, Emily Smythe Nelson (2019). Memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O.
