in honor of Mary.

I was so sorry to hear of the passing of Mary Ann. We taught together for many years at Sherwood Forest Elementary School. Her 5th grade students were big buddies to the little buddies in my kindergarten class for several years. I could see Mary Ann’s influence on them by the kind and helpful ways they interacted with the little ones. She was a very professional and dedicated educator. We need more like her! May peace be with her family.

I had Miss Palmer as my 5th grade teacher in the 1959-1960 school year at the former North Elementary School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She was easily my favorite grade school teacher for many reasons that go beyond the solid academic education I received from her. My classmates were from various walks of life - some from very low economic backgrounds - while others came from just the opposite. She taught the virtues of having respect for one another and that life was not going to always favor the more economically blessed side of society. It has been 58 years since I sat in her classroom, but I have never forgotten the life lessons I learned while a student and have carried those lessons forward into adulthood. She was a remarkable teacher for all the right reasons. She helped mold me into the person I am today. I was blessed to have her as my 5th grade teacher.

I am very sorry to hear of Miss Palmer's passing. She was my fifth grade teacher for the 1984-1985 school year at Sherwood Forest Elementary in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Miss Palmer is easily my favorite teacher from my years of education. She was firm, but so loving and fair. I responded very well to her teaching style and I owe my love of math and social studies to her. After being led to become a fifth grade teacher myself, I've modeled the last twenty-two years after Miss Palmer. I still fall short of the example she made before me, but I know many students have benefited from what I learned from her. My younger brother was in Miss Palmer's class a few years after me. It wasn't too long ago that we both had a conversation about how much we enjoyed her and were impacted by her. May God bless Miss Palmer and all of you as you move forward.
