Mr. Jerry Phifer McGuire, 83, of Fort Mill, S.C., retired journalist, died Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at his home. He was born in rural Rock Hill, S.C., a son of the late Grier and Olivia Perry McGuire.Visitation for family and friends will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, December 10, 2015 at Riverview Presbyterian Church, 124 N. Sutton Road, Fort Mill.A worship service celebrating Mr. McGuire’s life will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, December 11, 2015 at the church. Burial with a Masonic Memorial Service will follow at Grand View Memorial Park, 620 S. Cherry Rd., Rock Hill.Surviving are his loving wife of 58 years, the former Margie Lucile Price; two devoted sons, Alan Keith McGuire, of the home, and Damon Scot McGuire (Kerri Lyn), of Rock Hill, S.C; two precious granddaughters, Chloe Jordin McGuire and Sophie Ariel McGuire of Rock Hill; a twin brother, Perry Downs McGuire (Susie) of Catawba; three sisters-in-law, Annie Lou Price Deason, Eula Mae Merritt McGuire and Minnie Mae Price Stegall, all of Rock Hill; and Catherine Gibson Price of Andrews; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Jerry “Jay” Phifer McGuire, Jr.; and three brothers, Grier McGuire, Jr., Frank Olin McGuire, Sr. and Thomas Clarence McGuire.Jerry and Margie met while attending the young people’s group at Riverview Presbyterian Church, Fort Mill, where they became charter members and he was later a church deacon and elder. A graduate of Rock Hill High School and the University of South Carolina, he was on the staff of The Gamecock, student newspaper, and belonged to The Euphradian Society. Mr. McGuire served as sports writer and managing editor of The Elkin (N.C.) Tribune and was editor of the Fort Mill Times. He won several national and state awards in journalism. He was a member of Freemasonry for 59 years and served as worshipful master of Catawba Masonic Lodge No. 56 of Fort Mill. He received the lodge’s Mason of the Year Award and the William L. Broadwell Memorial Award for service to the craft and the community. He was appointed committeeman in the South Carolina Grand Lodge of Ancient Freemasonry. Mr. McGuire was appointed to several terms on the Catawba Regional Council of Governments by the York County Council.
