Mr. Thomas Herbert Carrouth, age 83, passed away Sunday, August 29, 2021, at Wellmore of Tega Cay. Viewing will be from 10:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 2, 2021, at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. The Celebration of Life Service will follow at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Joel McMakin and the Rev. Katherine Pace officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the committal in the Family Life Center. Born in Fort Mill, Herb was a son of the late Judge Thomas Carrouth and Sarah Jones Carrouth. He received his bachelor’s degree from Clemson University and his master’s degree from Winthrop University. Herb was a career educator. Before his retirement, he taught fifth grade at Indian Land Elementary School, and taught in the Gifted and Talented Program for Lancaster County. In addition to his work as a teacher, Herb operated the Panhandle Convenience Store in the 1970’s and early 1980’s. Herb was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, and for several years he enjoyed volunteering with Salkehatchie. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Betty Griffin Carrouth; his children, Michael “Mike” Dennis Carrouth (Eileen) of Columbia and Sarah Allison Mouser (Larry) of Deep Gap, N.C.; his sister, Harriett Carrouth Collins of Surfside Beach; and seven grandchildren, Hollis, John Bennett, Griffin, Pierce, Eliza, Rebecca, and Adam; and two great-grandchildren, Madeline and Sophia. In addition to his parents, Herb was preceded in death by his brother, Douglas Carrouth. Memorials may be made to Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, 238 Fort Mill Hwy., Indian Land, SC 29707.
