Grace Barnett McGinn

Mrs. Grace Barnett McGinn, 99, died Sunday, September 4, 2016, at Hospice & Community Care in Rock Hill.The family will receive friends from Noon to 12:45 p.m., Wednesday, September 7, 2016, at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. The funeral will follow at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Joel McMakin officiating. Burial will be at church cemetery.Born in Westminster, Mrs. McGinn was one of five children born to the late George Mish Barnett, Sr. and Hattie Maude Cox Barnett and the widow of the late William “Bill” Charlton McGinn, Jr. (1993). She graduated from Winthrop College in 1940 with a Bachelor of Arts in Home Economics. She served as the governess for Olin D. Johnston’s daughters while he served as S.C. Governor and U.S. Senator. Mrs. McGinn went on to teach for 25 years in the Cassatt, Pacolet and Indian Land School Districts. She was a member of the Retired Teachers’ Association and the Order of the Eastern Star.A long time member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, Mrs. McGinn participated in the Senior Citizens Group and was a teacher for the children and the John McGinn Sunday School Class. She also served on the Pastor/Parrish committee. With four generations of Clemson University graduates in the family, Mrs. McGinn was an avid Clemson supporter. Mrs. McGinn enjoyed flower gardening, crocheting, cooking and crafts. Going to the mountains was one of her favorite trips to make, she considered it “God’s Country”.Surviving are her children, William C. McGinn, III (Mary) of Westminster, SC, Sallie Cooper (Jerry) of Round Rock, Texas and Banks McGinn (Marty) of Fort Mill; six grandchildren, Catherine McGinn Nicholls, Matt McGinn (Chris), Marc Cooper (Julie), Allison Albaugh (Nate), Reid McGinn and Gray McGinn; and seven great-grandchildren.Memorial contributions may be made to Tamassee DAR School, P.O.
