https://youtu.be/53mB_rBZ5uYDebra Helms Jowers Mayes, age 73, passed away Thursday, October 22, 2020, at home.A service of committal will be at 2 p.m. on Monday, October 26, 2020, at Unity Cemetery, with the Rev. Karen H. Radcliffe officiating.A Fort Mill native, Debra was a daughter of James Lorane Helms and Dorcas “Dot” Griffin Helms. She worked for Springs Industries for 26 years, beginning in the cloth room and retiring from the personnel department. After retiring, Debra went back to school at York Technical College and Gaston College earning her diploma in practical nursing. She received the “Nurse of the Year” award from the North Carolina Association Non-profit Homes for the Aging in 2007. She also served as a patient sitter and was a dedicated caregiver for many people in her family and her community. Debra was a devoted member of St. John’s United Methodist Church. She loved flowers, working in her yard, and taking trips with her sister-in-law, Phyllis Helms.Surviving are her brother, Johnny Helms of Waxhaw, N.C.; her sisters-in-law, Phyllis Helms and Denise Jowers, both of Fort Mill; and nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Debra was preceded in death by her husband, Thom Jowers and her brothers, Nat Helms and Larry Helms.Memorials may be made to St. John’s United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1298, Fort Mill, SC 29716.

Frances Walker

Debra was a wonderful caring person always kind considerate and very understanding and a friend to all. She was a special person one of a kind. I will never forget her and all she done for me. I worked with her for years at Springs. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. May God bless you all. Frances Walker
