Mrs. Velma Ray Toomer, 91, of Charlotte, died Thursday, December 4, 2014, at Carolinas Medical Center in Pineville.A memorial service will be held at 1:30 pm, Saturday, December 13, 2014 at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 8515 Rea Rd, Waxhaw, N.C., with Father Todd Dill officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.Born in Tabor City, N.C., Mrs. Toomer was a daughter of the late Melvin Cane Ray and Annie Elderdice Ray. She proudly served in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps during World War II and resided in Charlotte after her service. Mrs. Toomer retired as Office Manager from Harris Crane, Inc. after 37 years of service, and was a former member of the Charlotte Business Women’s Association. Velma was an avid traveler visiting many destinations in Europe, Africa, and the United States. She also enjoyed reading, gardening, volunteering and spending time with friends and family. Service to her church was a central focus throughout her life. Velma’s genuine warmth, caring spirit, and positive support were experienced by all of those who came in contact with her. All through the years, her love of life was evidenced through her never-ending vibrant spirit and enthusiasm that she shared with everyone. She was truly one of a kind.Surviving are her daughter, Victoria Navey and her husband, Jim of Fort Mill South Carolina; her sister, Ena Long of Pennsylvania; and two grandchildren, Laura and James. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Christian Toomer.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 8515 Rea Road, Waxhaw, N.C. 28173.
