Mr. Robert Lummus Reid, Sr., 83, died Thursday, July 23, 2015, at the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House in Rock Hill.The memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 26, 2015, at Unity Presbyterian Church, with Dr. Dan Holloway and the Rev. Jeannie Bickett officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall.Born in Richburg, S.C., Mr. Reid was a son of the late David Cochrane Reid and Rose Burns Reid. In 1953, he graduated from Erskine College with a Bachelor’s Degree in physical education. He was a member of Unity Presbyterian Church, where he was ordained as Deacon and had served as the Sunday School Superintendent. Mr. Reid retired as President and Chief Executive Officer of Leroy Springs & Company, Inc. in 1996 after having begun as the Recreation Director in 1956. Through his years with Leroy Springs & Co., he served in many positions, General Recreation Director, Vice President, Executive Vice President and on the Board of Directors. He was a member of the S.C. Recreation & Park Association since 1956, having served as President in 1964, 1965 and 1966 and was a Life-time Achievement Award recipient. He was also a member of the National Recreation and Park Assoc. since 1961. He was an appointed member of the American Academy for Park and Recreation Society and the American Institute of Park Executives. Mr. Reid was a past member of the Fort Mill Lions Club, Jaycees and the past president of the Field Trial Association.Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Vera G. Reid; children, Robert Reid, Jr. and his wife, Terri of Fort Mill, Kaye Compton and her husband, Ken of Spartanburg, Jeanie Frick and her husband, Ken of Spartanburg, Kelly Gillig and her husband, Tim of Simpsonville; his brother, John Calvin Reid (Kathryn) of Atlanta; sister, Jane Reid Miller (Barney) of Greensboro, N.C.; ten grandchildren Ryan Beasley, Vera Herbert, Will Compton, Kelly Woodward, Rob Reid, Riley Shaftner, Press Compton, Jeanie Phibbs, Russ Gillig and Annie Gillig; eight great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Retired Col. John A. Simpson of Due West; sister-in-law, Claire Reid of Richburg; and caregiver, Kelly Wells. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Frances Ellis (Roddey) and Rose Burns Simpson; and a brother, David C. “Bud” Reid.
