Mae Watson Moses, 90, died Saturday, October 31, 2015, at CMC in Charlotte following a brief illness.A memorial service will be at 2 pm Saturday, November 14, 2015 at Wolfe Funeral Home in Fort Mill, with Pastor Tim Webster officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.Mae was born in the rural community outside Laurens, SC to the late Claude and Fanny Watson. She left home at age 17 to work in a Columbia munitions factory during the war, and began her career with Southern Bell in Charlotte in 1951, retiring in 1983 after 32 years of service. She was an active union member, ultimately serving as the local union rep, and was memorably escorted to one strike on the back of a police motorcycle in front of TV cameras. As the single mother of two children and many pets, she later made the difficult decision to move into management at the company for the increased wages offered, although it always bothered her to cross a picket line. As a manager, she always considered “her group” to be the best group on the floor and she would tell you they proved her right year after year. After retiring, volunteering was a major part of her life. Mae taught Junior Achievement for multiple grade levels for many years, often teaching several classes a semester. She was an active member of the Telephone Pioneers of America for most of her senior life. While she enjoyed helping any way she could, she especially loved opportunities to usher at Charlotte Hornets games or at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Getting to ride around the track in a race car was a big thrill and she counted herself among the first Hornets’ fans. Mae loved reading and was very proud of the golden library card she received from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Library to honor 50 years of active membership. She enjoyed catching up with old friends at the Landmark Restaurant, attending gatherings as long as she was able. She loved children all of her life and was thrilled by the birth of her grandson Noah in 2004. In addition to Noah, Mae is survived by her children, Renee and Scott, by her daughter-in-law Beth, by her sister Liz McRorie, and by her cat Bo, as well as several generations of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, eight siblings, her favorite niece, her beloved dog, Daffy, and by far too many friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region at www.donatehospice.Memories of Mae may be recorded at www.wolfefuneralhome.com.
