Dorcas "Dot" Helms

Mrs. Dorcas “Dot” Griffin Helms, 96, of Fort Mill, died Friday, October 9, 2015, at her home. The family will receive friends from 1 until 1:45 p.m., Monday, October 12, 2015 at St. John’s United Methodist Church. The funeral will be at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Karen Radcliffe officiating. Burial will follow at Unity Cemetery. Born in the Osceola Community of Indian Land, Mrs. Helms was one of ten children born to the late Joseph White Nathaniel Griffin and Ider Ashley Griffin. She graduated from Indian Land High School, where she was Valedictorian of her class. Mrs. Helms was retired from Springs Industries as a battery filler and also from Fort Mill Elementary School as a cafeteria worker. She was the oldest member of St. John’s United Methodist Church. Mrs. Helms enjoyed cooking, sewing and crocheting. She was a good homemaker and loved her Lord and Savior.Surviving are two sons, Johnny Helms of Waxhaw, N.C. and Larry Helms of Fort Mill; her daughter, Debra Mayes of Fort Mill; her daughter-in-law, Phyllis Murr Helms of Fort Mill; her brother, John Hunter Griffin of Indian Land; four grandchildren, Becky and David Helms (Ashley) and Jennifer Helms and Angela (Seth) Morrow; and two great-grandchildren, Kursten and Tristan. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Lorane Helms (2000); and her son, Drury Nathaniel “Nat” Helms (2012).Memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O.
